Reply Rob January 11, 2013 at 18:18I've not tested all hardware, that would be a bit difficult. If all is right, the fglrx driver that corresponds to AMD Catalyst 13.4 will be installed and working on your system. This command will do that: $ sudo aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE In the last case (at least) it is essential to run it without the Xorg server working.

  1. Reporting a bug when using fglrx via supported Ubuntu repository 8.1.
  2. On a side note - within XBMC the digital/dts sound disappeared for some reason - the fix is to disable system sounds within XBMC settings - bizarre but it works.

  7. I've used about seven different cards, and all have worked fine.

To confirm the drivers are working open a terminal and type: fglrxinfo You should get an output similar to the following: fglrxinfo display: :0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro ATTENTION RADEON USERS NOTE: If you enter your card information on AMD/ATI's driver page, it will offer you the Catalyst 9-3 driver to download. The fan  is an acceptable level until I launch XBMC when instantly it spins up to literally sound like a hair dryer!Since my initial post I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu Although after following my tutorial 1080p playback should be fine.

sudo apt-get install xvba-va-driver libva-glx1 libva-egl1 vainfo You can test to see if you have installed them correctly thus: sudo vainfo When installed correctly, you should get the following: libva: VA-API I'm using a Radeon 3200 HD "card" by the way.
